Lithography (from the ancient Greek words lithos, meaning 'stone', and graphein, meaning 'to write') is a method of printing originally based on the principle that oil and water do not mix. The printing is from a Bavarian limestone with a smooth surface.
An image is drawn with oil, fat, or grease onto the surface of a smooth, level stone. The stone is treated with a mixture of acid and gum arabic, creating a chemical reaction which prepares the drawing and the stone to be printed. When the stone is sponged with water, an oil-based ink can then be applied; the non-image areas will be repelled by the water, and the ink will only stick to the drawing. The ink will then be transferred to a blank sheet of paper, producing a print.
